I got my September 2009 issue of Vogue and boy is it large, but this issue is nothing (in terms of volume) compared to the issue I received two years ago. The September 2007 issue of Vogue with Sienna Miller on the cover had a record of 727 pages- the largest and heaviest issue of Vogue ever- coming in at five pounds. Now Vogue and fashion fans get a glimpse of what it takes to put together an issue of the most influential publication in fashion. So all you fashionistas who want to get into fashion- you might want to reconsider after you take a look into what really goes down.

About the movie
Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue for 20 years, is the most powerful figure in fashion. Wintour embodies a fascinating contradiction of passion and perfectionism as she reigns over a dizzying array of designers, models, photographers, and editors. Director R.J. Cutler delivers a rare insider account of the nine months leading up to the printing of the highly anticipated September issue of the magazine, which promises to be the biggest one ever. He takes us behind the scenes at fashion week, to Europe and back, on shoots and reshoots, and into closed-door staff meetings, bearing witness to an arduous and sometimes emotionally demanding process. At the eye of this annual fashion hurricane is the two-decade relationship between Wintour and Grace Coddington, incomparable creative director and genius stylist. They are perfectly matched for this age-old conflict between creator and curator. Through them, we see close up the delicate creative chemistry it takes to remain at the top of the ever-changing fashion field. Cutler cleverly deconstructs the creative process as it plays out in the hollowed halls of Vogue, lined with racks of couture. In The September Issue, his access and insight are impressive and make us aware that he is offering us a privileged glimpse into a world many dream about but few see.

old vogue coverFor fashion enthusiasts, September is holiday time for lifestyle and luxury magazines. Once upon a time, the biggest issues of the year were published during the fall season but double-digit percentage declines in advertising has slimmed down the fall fashion issues. Based on publishers’ estimates of September ad pages, released Tuesday, luxury fashion titles, a category that includes Harper’s Bazaar, W, Vogue, Elle and InStyle, are down 27% on average.

According Forbes.com, Time Inc.’s InStyle was the only title to post a year-over-year projected increase, adding six pages, or 2%. The slight increase for the Time Warner title is a fast boost to the record of publisher Connie Anne Phillips, who was named to the post five months ago after 14 years at Vogue. Conde Nast’s W posted the largest decline, off 53%, losing 165 pages of advertising. Hachette Filipacchi’s Elle expects ad pages to drop 21% while Hearst’s Harper’s Bazaar anticipates a 27% decline.

These days, magazines are dissolving left and right. It’s great to hear a publication being launched with high expectation for success.

GQ is the latest Condé Nast title to expand into China. Jonathan Newhouse, chairman of Condé Nast International, said in a statement that the monthly magazine will begin publishing in October. It will be produced by Condé Nast under a copyright cooperation agreement with the China News Service. “GQ is a flagship title of Condé Nast. We believe the magazine will be a success in the Chinese market,” said Newhouse.

The market could be a huge one for the men’s title, considering the country’s population of 1.3 billion, and the abundance of male only children born after the country implemented its family planning policy in the Seventies. The wealthier, city-dwelling young men are often referred to by market research firms as “Little Emperors” with a voracious appetite for luxury goods and designer brands. GQ is the fourth Condé Nast title to appear in the region after Vogue, Self and Modern Bride.
